The 2024 Combined Annual Meeting of the Southwest Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and the Texas Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons will be held April 4 – 6, 2024 at the National Historic Landmark world-class resort, The Greenbrier, located amid the breathtaking mountains of  White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. 

We are excited to welcome you and your guests to this highly regarded property. The tradition continues during this year’s annual meeting program providing an unbeatable combination of educational programs, social and networking opportunities, and our popular exhibit hall. You’ll find:

  • Up to 10 hours of continuing dental and medical education credits.
  • The Keynote Lecture: Update on Orthognathic Surgery  delivered by Edward Ellis III, DDS, MS Chair and Professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and  Daniel Perez, DDS Professor and Program Director in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at UT Health School of Dentistry San Antonio, Texas. The lecture will encompass updates on orthognathic Surgery. 
  • The Byrd-Tilson-Walker Residents Day program will again showcase some of our most talented residents and the research they are conducting at our residency programs.
  • “Navigating State Licensure Compliance: What You Need to Know & Why” presented by Kelly Parker, Director of External Affairs & Gonverment Relation, Propelus during the TSOMS membership luncheon.
  • “Opioid Management in the OMS Practice” presented by Dave Grogan, DDS during the SWSOMS membership luncheon. 
  • OBEAM Simulation as innovative practice exercising emergency protocols. 
  • The renowned and wide-ranging Exhibit Hall will offer attendees ample, uninterrupted time to learn about the products and services busy OMS practices use every day. 

In addition, you will enjoy such fun-filled events as the Thursday afternoon Golf Tournament at the acclaimed Old White Course and the evening Welcome Reception/Companion Appreciation celebration, and the Friday Evening Cocktail Reception including a Falconry Exhibition followed by the Alumni Dinners. To conclude another successful meeting, Saturday’s evening President’s Event will be held on site at Kate’s Mountain Lodge. Byrd-Tilson-Walker Residents’ Day Presentations
(4 hrs. CDE/CME)

Outstanding young oral and maxillofacial surgery residents from the Southwestern and Midwestern regions will present scientific and clinical research initiatives ongoing at their respective institutions of study. Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this activity, the learner will be able to:

  1. Discuss a broad overview of the extensive clinical scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery residency training programs.
  2. Inform oral and maxillofacial surgeons in private practice about current advances in treatment modalities, new treatment techniques and procedures, and innovative technological applications that improve patient outcomes.
  3. Encourage future oral and maxillofacial surgeons to remain involved in clinical research throughout their careers and to support the expertise and evolution of the specialty.

Learning Objectives:

Upon Completion of this activity, the learner will be able to:

  1. To understand when combined TMJ and Orthognathic surgery is beneficial.
  2. To understand what TMJ intervention is required when patients present with combined TMJ and Orthognathic problems.
  3. To understand the sequencing of combined TMJ and Orthognathic surgery.
  4. To understand sequencing possibilities for bimaxillary orthognathic surgery.
  5. To understand the use of patient-specific bone plates in orthognathic surgery to position the jaws.
  6. To understand the physiology and treatment of condylar resorption. 
  7. To understand the diagnosis and treatment of condylar hyperplasia

CANCELLED

Beginning in 2026, AAOMS members who provide office-bases moderate sedation, deep sedation, and/or general anesthesia must successfully complete an approved anesthesia simulation training course every five years. 

The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) is offering the Office-Based Emergency Airway Management Simulations Hands-on Course (OBEAM) during the SWSOMS meeting! We are excited to have AAOMS join our annual meeting for a second year in a row. The OBEAM course registration is separate from the SWSOMS Annual Meeting Registration. Meeting attendees will complete online coursework in advance of  SWSOMS Meeting through AAOMSA registration and will complete a two-hour hands-on session on-site.

Hotel Cancellations

The SWSOMS contracts with The Greenbrier Resort for a specific number of rooms. Last-minute cancelations result in fees to the Society. Any cancelations received within 7 days of arrival that negatively affect our group will be billed to you by both the hotel and the SWSOMS. The hotel will automatically charge one night’s room and tax penalty to you. Should the SWSOMS be negatively impacted by room block reduction and attrition penalties, the remaining charges billed to the SWSOMS will be billed to you separately. Payment is required within 30 days of receipt of the invoice.

General Requirement: Dress Code must be adhered to for the greater enjoyment of all guests. Robes and swimwear may not be worn outside of guest rooms with the exception of the swimming pools and spa. Locker rooms are provided at both pools. Children 10 and older are to have attire similar to that of adults. Tank tops, cut-offs, short shorts, sweatpants, men’s hats and baseball caps are not permitted at any of the dining venues.

Lobby Bar & Prime 44 West: Business casual attire. Jackets are suggested for gentlemen. These venues enjoy an upscale and inviting environment. If denim is your attire preference, well-kept denim in a dark shade is ours. Men’s hats and baseball caps are not permitted.

Draper’s: Casual attire. Men’s hats and baseball caps are not permitted.

Slammin’ Sammy’s: Resort attire is required (collared sport shirts, sweaters, jackets, dress slacks and walking shorts). These venues enjoy a relaxed environment. If denim is your attire preference, well-kept denim in a dark shade is ours. Men’s hats and baseball caps are not permitted.

Tree Tops Café: Casual attire including appropriate swimwear is acceptable. 

The Casino Club at The Greenbrier, Twelve Oaks, In-Fusion & Greenbrier & Royale  (Adults Only 21+): BEFORE 7PM  Resort attire is required (collared sport shirts, sweaters, jackets, dress slacks and walking shorts). If denim is your attire preference, well-kept denim in a dark shade is ours.

AFTER 7PM  Business casual attire. Jackets are required for gentlemen. If denim is your attire preference, well-kept denim in a dark shade is ours. Men’s hats and baseball caps are not permitted. 

Sports & Recreational Activities: GOLF, GOLF ACADEMY AND TENNIS No denim. Collared sport shirts, golf and/or tennis sweaters, shirts or blouses, slacks, walking shorts, Bermuda shorts, knickers, golf and/or tennis shorts (for tennis only). Shoes must have light colored soles for indoor tennis.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES Appropriate attire for the specific recreational activity is required. Jeans are considered appropriate for horseback riding, carriage rides, hiking, fishing, biking, hunting, falconry, Gun Club, off-road driving and designated theme parties (group activities). Swimwear and shorts are appropriate for whitewater rafting and kayaking. 

Café Carleton, The Forum, Sam Snead’sResort attire is required (collared sport shirts, sweaters, jackets, dress slacks and walking shorts). These venues enjoy an upscale and inviting environment. If denim is your attire preference, well-kept denim in a dark shade is ours. Men’s hats and baseball caps are not permitted.

TRANSPORTATION

Commercial Flight

Greenbrier Valley Airport (LWB) is served by American Airlines and operated by Contour, and tickets are currently available for purchase at contourairlines.com. Greenbrier Valley Airport is located only 15 minutes away from The Greenbrier. American/Contour offers daily flights to and from Charlotte Douglas International). Other airports convenient to The Greenbrier include Roanoke, VA (ROA), Charleston, WV (CRW)
and Beckley, WV (BKW) with service provided by major carriers.

 

Great News 

The SWSOMS has arranged designated AM & PM times for roundtrip transportation to and from the Roanoke Airport to The Greenbrier. 

Roundtrip Transportation to and from the Roanoke Airport (ROA) to The Greenbrier will take approximately 1.5 hours.                                                              $250 / person
